With Halloween just a few weeks away, coming up with fun treats to serve is likely top of mind. It’s easy enough to buy a big bag of candy to cater to trick-or-treaters, but what if you’re having a party or just want to have something that stands out, especially for your own kids? Perhaps you are even looking for a healthy alternative to a Halloween classic.

Some people just aren’t as creative as others when it comes to trying to think of ideas for Halloween treats and then there are those who simply don’t have a lot of spare time to whip up something. But the truth is that not everything needs to be complicated or time-consuming. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best!

Here are 15 simple recipes and ideas for Halloween treats, whether it be to feed your own family, or all of the kids in the neighborhood.

1. Spooky Spider Cookies

Ingreidents:

  • Any kind of cookies, homemade or from cookie dough
  • Mini Reese’s peanut butter cups
  • Candy eyes
  • Chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Bake Cookies as directed. As you pull them out of the oven use a teaspoon-measuring spoon to make divots in the middle of the cookie and then allow the cookies to cool completely.
  2. While you are waiting for your cookies to cool, place a cup of chocolate chips in a bowl and microwave them in intervals of 12 seconds until they are completely melted. You will use this melted chocolate to drizzle the legs onto the cookies.
  3. Next, place Your Reeses Peanut Butter Cups in the middle of the cookie where your divot is. By placing a dab of melted chocolate on the back of the candy eyes, you can then stick them into place on the peanut butter cups.
  4. Lastly, use your melted chocolate to drizzle the spiders legs onto the cookies. Let the melted chocolate dry.

2. Bat Bites

Ingredients:

  • Mini Reese’s peanut butter cups
  • Thin Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies
  • Pre-made or homemade cream cheese frosting
  • Candy eyes

Directions:

  1. Remove the wrappers from the Reese’s cups.
  2. Break the cookies in half and then separate all of the pieces from one another so you now have four “bat wings”.
  3. Scrape off the frosting and discard or just eat.
  4. Fill up a plastic bag with the store bought or homemade frosting. Cut off the tip of the bag and pipe frosting onto the back corners of the broken cookie pieces.
  5. Press one cookie piece on the left of the Reeses cup and another cookie piece on the right of the Reeses cup.
  6. Pipe frosting on the back of the edible eyes and secure on top of the center of the Reeses cup.

3. Healthy Tangerine Pumpkins

Ingredients:

  • Tangerines, mandarin oranges or clementines (seedless)
  • Celery stalks and leaves

Directions:

  1. Peel tangerines, use your fingernail or a small paring knife to scrape off as much white membranes as possible.
  2. Wash, dry and slice celery.Cut inch narrow pieces from the tops of the celery and insert into the peeled tangerines.
  3. Cut leaves from the celery tops and arrange to look like pumpkin leaves.

4. Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 10 ounces marshmallows
  • 6 cups rice krispie cereal
  • 10 drops yellow food coloring
  • 10 drops blue food coloring
  • Melted Chocolate/Candy Coating
  • Candy Eyes

Directions:

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot and add the marshmallows. Stir until they are all melted
  2. Add in the food coloring and stir until it turns green.
  3. Add Rice Krispie cereal a little bit at a time and stir to combine.
  4. Press Rice Krispie cereal into a buttered 9 x 13 pan. Press flat and let cool. Let Rice Krispie treats sit for about 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from pan and cut into squares.
  6. Melt Chocoalte according the package directions. Dip the tops of the Rice Krispie Treats into the melted chocolate.
  7. Lay on a sheet of wax paper or a plate.
  8. Use some of the melted chocolate and stick on the candy eyes.
  9. Fill a ziplock bag with some of the melted chocolate, snip an end off and pipe a stitch mouth onto Frankenstein.
  10. Let the Frankenstein Rice Krispie Treats sit for about 20 minutes or until the chocolate had hardened.

Ingredients:

  • 1 apple
  • Jar of peanut butter or other substitute
  • Mini marshmallows

Directions:

  1. Start by cutting the apple into slices, then cut them into smaller slices.
  2. Put about a teaspoon or two of peanut butter onto each slice of apple, but just on one side of the apple. Then put a row of mini marshmallows across one apple slice.
  3. Sandwich together with an apple slice that only has peanut butter.

  • Mini Reese’s cups
  • Pretzel Rods
  • Pull apart Twizzlers

Directions:

  1. Unwrap the Reese’s cups and flip upside down.
  2. In the very center, gently press in a pretzel rod.
  3. Pull apart twizzlers and cut in thirds.
  4. Tie one individual strand around the pretzel. Tighten and then snip off the ends with scissors.

7. Oreo Eyeball Cookies

  • OREO cookies
  • Blue and Green gel decorating gel
  • Red food coloring
  • Black/brown M&Ms or Reeses pieces

Directions:

  1. Remove one of the chocolate cookies from the OREO.
  2. Add a glob of gel.
  3. Place 1 M&M in the center of the icing.
  4. Put a small dab of red food coloring in a bowl or on a plate, like a painters palette. Using a teeny tiny paint brush, carefully paint red vein lines on the white frosting of the OREO.

  • Apples
  • Mini chocolate chips or dried blueberries

Directions:

  1. Cut each apple in half vertically and carefully remove the core.
  2. Starting at one edge, use a vegetable peeler to remove haphazard strips of apple peel.
  3. Lay each apple half on a plate or serving tray and press two eyes into the apple in an area where the peel has been removed. If you’re using mini chocolate chips, push the pointy end in first. If you’re using dried blueberries, it may help to use a paring knife to make a tiny divot in the apple where you want each eye to go, and then gently press the blueberry eyes in

  • 3 Medium Navel Oranges
  • 1 cup Mixed Fruit

Directions:

  1. Slice off the tops of the oranges.
  2. Using a spoon, scoop out the pulp of the oranges.
  3. Cut out faces on each orange to resemble a Jack O Lantern.
  4. Fill each orange with mixed fruit.

  • 6 hard-boiled eggs, halved
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • whole black olives

Directions:

  1. Cut eggs in half lengthwise. Slip out yolks and mash.
  2. Stir in mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, vinegar, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cut whole olive in half lengthwise.
  4. Put one half on mashed yolk for the spider’s body.
  5. Thinly slice the other half of the olive for the spiders legs. Put four legs on each side

11. Ghostbusters’ Slimed Popcorn

Ingredients:

  • cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 2 heaping cups miniature marshmallows (or 12 large)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 drops each green and yellow food coloring
  • 8 cups popped popcorn

Directions:

  1. Place butter, brown sugar and corn syrup in a 3-quart sauce pan. Cook over medium heat until sugar is dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat and add marshmallows and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
  3. Add the green and yellow food coloring to create desired color.
  4. Put the popcorn in a large bowl and pour the green slime marshmallow mixture over the popcorn. Stir with a large spoon until coated. Cover until ready to serve.

Ingredients:

  • 1 3.4 ounce package instant chocolate pudding
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 8 ounce tub Cool Whip
  • 1 16 ounce package chocolate sandwich cookies
  • Gummy Worms

Directions:

  1. n a large bowl, combine pudding and milk. Whisk constantly for 2 minutes and allow to set in fridge for 5 minutes.
  2. In a large plastic bag, add cookies and crush with a rolling pin.
  3. When pudding is set, add Cool Whip and half the crushed cookies. Stir well until mixture is all the same color.
  4. In small plastic cups place 1 tablespoon of remaining crushed cookies.
  5. Spoon pudding mixture into another plastic bag, and cut corner off to make a pastry bag. Pipe pudding into plastic cups, filling about the way.
  6. Top each with about 2 tablespoons remaining cookies and gummy worms.

13. Bowl of Worms

Ingredients:

  • 2 packs Raspberry jello
  • 1 package unflavored gelatin
  • cup whipping cream
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 15 drops green food coloring
  • 100 flexible straws
  • Tall container

Directions:

  1. Combine gelatin in bowl and add boiling water.Let it cool to lukewarm and then add the whipping cream and 15 drops green food coloring.
  2. Gather your straws (don’t forget to flex them out) and put them in the container. It’s important that the straws have a tight fit so the jello stays in the straws. For this reason, a 1 liter carton may be better; you will probably get longer worms since there is a tighter fit. If you have a bigger container, a rubber band around the straws is helpful. Or you could just add more straws to fill the container.
  3. Add the gelatin mixture to the straw-filled container and let it set until firm.
  4. There are multiple ways you can remove the worms from the straws. You can roll a rolling pin over the straws and squeeze them out or you can hold the straws over warm water. The worms will slip right out.

14. Witch’s Finger Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 1 roll sugar cookie dough or your own sugar cookie recipe
  • 1-2 cups flour
  • sliced or whole peeled almonds
  • Cocoa powder

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350F.
  2. Take sugar cookie dough mix out of packaging and knead 1 cup of flour into it (you may need to add a few drops of water if it gets too dry).

    Pull off a piece of dough (about the size of half a golf ball) and you are going to want to add as much more flour as you can to that piece before it starts to break up.

  3. Make that piece into a finger shape but make sure it is a little thinner than your finger.
  4. Shape the knuckles and using the back of a knife, press wrinkle lines into it.
  5. Add the almond to the tip.
  6. Bake for 7-8 minutes.
  7. Pull out of oven and right away, press the almond into the tip to make it look like a big cuticle.
  8. After cooling for a few minutes use a paintbrush and cocoa powder to make it look more real.

15. Witch’s Hats

Ingredients:

  • Fudge covered cookies (i.e. Grasshoppers, Fudge Stripes)
  • Hershey Kisses
  • Frosting in Halloween colors

Directions:

  1. Either buy colored frosting or get a tub of white frosting and add food coloring.Transfer icing to piping bag or zippered bag and clip a corner.
  2. Pipe icing in the middle and stick an unwrapped kiss in the middle.
