Loretta Garza couldn’t believe it when her son, Parker, came home from school. The first-grader told her he didn’t eat lunch that day. When he explained why, he was brought to tears.
Parker went to get his lunch tray like any other day. Then the lunch lady took it out of his hands and threw it away because he didn’t have money in his account. She gave him a cheese sandwich.
He would have eaten the sandwich, but his classmates immediately began to make fun of him. The students know that kids with the simple cheese sandwich can’t afford a full meal they teased him, calling him “poor.”
“If they’re going to throw it away, why waste it? There’s a lot of kids out there that are starving,” Loretta said.
The officials at Aloe Elementary School in San Antonio, TX, say they notified Loretta with a letter about Parker’s lunch funds. The mother said she never received it.
The school district claims that the USDA prohibits them from providing students with meals they can’t pay for.
Loretta believes the school could have done a better job communicating with parents. The same incident happened the previous year with her older son.
